Winter/Spring 2018 Season Announcement

We are incredibly excited to announce our Winter/Spring 2018 season of music, theatre, and dance performances at the Lawrence Arts Center. Story Slam                                                                                     January 12, February 9, March 9, April 6, May 11, 2018

Real stories, live & uncensored. Stories told live, MOTH-style, the second Friday of each month. Never the same story, or evening, twice. Adults, 18+ only. Live music & social hour starts at 7pm. Slam starts at 7:30pm. Cocktails throughout. The second Friday of every month, January through May.

 

An Evening of New World Music with Roots in Geometry                                                                   February 2, 2018

Join us for an exciting evening of New World Music that has deep roots in Geometry! Featuring the best musicians of the region, this concert will include new world music arrangements recently set for violin and clarinet. Purnaprajna Bangere on Violin, Amit Kavthekar on Tabla, Bob Walzel on Clarinet, and Brandon Draper on percussion team up to play deeply interactive music that encompasses sounds from Indian classical and western classical music, combined with blues and jazz. The program will also feature instrumental solos by Purnaprajna and Walzel with percussion accompaniments by Kavthekar and Draper. 

 

The Wizard of Oz                                                                                                              February 22-25 / March 1-4, 2018

The Lawrence Arts Center is delighted to announce L. Frank Baum’s wonderful WIZARD OF OZ will be presented this coming spring! Join us for a new twist on this classic musical, re-imagined in an exciting new design, 1920’s style. A local production with lots of heart, this will be a wondrous evening of enchanting music, stunning choreography, and sensational performances.

 

Hedwig and the Angry Inch                                                                                                                           March 29, 2018

Join us for a screening of John Cameron Mitchell’s critically acclaimed cult film, Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Pride Party in the Main Lobby starts at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm. A transgender punk-rock girl from East Berlin tours the U.S. with her band as she tells her life story and follows the former lover/band-mate who stole her songs. Stay for a post-show talkback about LGBTQ+ issues, including transgender issues.  18+

 

Dot: a dance performance for very young children                                                                                    April 5-7, 2018

What if we danced the way that children draw? Performers in Dot explore how children move their bodies when they create art and share a performance directly inspired by the movement and artistry of children ages 2-5. Very young audiences will enter a blank world made from paper that the dancers transform through color, line, and shape over the course of the performance. Join us and experience dancing, painting on stage, live music, and moments of interaction with audiences.

Are you ready to sing your way through all the hits from hit Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Friday, April 6 at 7pm? Not to worry, lyrics will be projected on screen for those who need a little extra help remembering all those words.

 

Mary Baker’s Cabaret Showcase Gala                                                                                                          April 7, 2018

Mary Baker & Friends return for a gala Mainstage presentation of their best Broadway and cabaret songs from their 30-show history. Director Mary Baker accompanies on piano with Valance Penn on drums. Celebrate Cabaret’s history by dressing in your best glitzy and dramatic duds! Seating at tables onstage and in the seats.

The Lawrence Chapter of the Pantomime and Nontraditional Theatre Society present 30 plays in 60 minutes or less. Inspired by the Neo-Futurists of Chicago, this production is sure to knock your pa—socks off!

 

Kansas Folklife Festival: A Celebration of Music, Art, and Dance                                                        April 21, 2018

Celebrate Midwest music, dance, and art at the Kansas Folklife Festival! The festival will feature Lawrence’s masters of traditional fiddling, Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains. Grandfather of Midwest traditional music, fiddler and accordionist Dwight Lamb will join us as our special guest. The evening will begin with an art opening in the lower lobby, showcasing the visual art of Spencer and Rains, and celebrating the release of their new CD. Join us in age old traditions, featuring folk music, social and traditional dancing, visual art, and the rich history that makes this community vibrant.
