Hello and Happy June!
With over 400 students involved, Summer Youth Theatre is officially here! Our theme this summer is Claim Your Power and we can’t wait for you to see these young people sharing their voice and presence on our stages.
First up in June is SYT Novice: Disney’s The Jungle Book KIDS for one day only on June 8. Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle. Featuring 4th-6th graders, this performance occurs at our satellite space, Studio 720, at 720 E 9th St. #8.
Next up is SYT Junior: Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr. on June 13-16. Mary Poppins, a “practically perfect” nanny, arrives at Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane and bursts into the lives of the three Banks children. With patience, kindness, and a little bit of magic, Mary helps their family set things right. Check out our amazing cast of 6th-8th graders in the featured photo above!
Finishing June, we have SYT Senior: All in the Timing on June 20-22. An award-winning collection of one-act absurdist plays that culminates with the story of how Leon Trotsky spent a whole day with a mountain climber’s ax in his head before he died. The individual one-acts focus on language and wordplay, existentialist perspectives of life and meaning, and the complications involved in romantic relationships. In addition, please join us for a free Saturday afternoon performance of original work by our 8th-12th graders inspired by David Ives on June 22.
Finally, we are also working on our brand new one week SYT Rookie camp experiences for 1st-4th graders and our returning SYT Creative Play camp for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. What about all of our behind the scenes adventures? Our Technical Theatre and Costuming class students are hard at work building the sets and costumes for our June shows.
There is still time to join us! Enroll online, by phone, or at the front desk. Claim Your Power!
