If you find yourself walking down 9th Street between Downtown Lawrence and the Warehouse Arts District, stop by the historic Turnhalle (Turn-Hall-Uh) Building for a visual treat. 2015-16 Ceramics Artist-In-Residence Christy Wittmer, in preparation for the oncoming NCECA Conference in Kansas City March 16th – 19th, has placed her work in the windows of the building which can be seen street-side at the intersection of East 9th and Rhode Island. Titled Beneath, Beyond, Parallel To, this series of small installations is part of a sequence of exhibits the Lawrence Arts Center, the University of Kansas, Brackers Good Earth Clays, and multiple other institutions and galleries are featuring as Lawrence’s PreNCECA events.
From the artist:
“Kneel down, peek around, within. Subtle differences in color reveal shifts in materials and a cacophony of textures. Lean in. Intimate inspection reveals fingerprints, spaces between, shadows that play across the surface. Points of connection are subtle. Tiny details are alluring, inviting you to return for another look.”
Christy Wittmer received a BFA in painting and sculpture from Miami University. She has studied ceramics at San Diego City College and The Ohio State University and earned her MFA in ceramics from the University of Cincinnati in 2014. Since then she has been working as a glaze chemist at Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, OH. She has participated in artist residencies in Berlin, Germany, Jingdezhen, China and most recently at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada.
