We are delighted to share that Humanities Kansas recently awarded $10,000 to Lawrence Arts Center to support Ghosts of Segregation, Richard Frishman’s award-winning photography project of the same name, coming to Lawrence this fall. A series of public programs will explore Frishman’s photographs in context. Ghosts of Segregation will run from September 10 – December 12, 2021 in the galleries at the Lawrence Arts Center. All exhibitions at the Lawrence Arts Center are entirely free and open to the public.
Richard Frishman explains, “Ghosts of Segregation photographically explores the vestiges of America’s racism evident in the built environment, hidden in plain sight… Past is prologue.” Frishman’s photographs are developed using a technique called stitching, where each image is a composite of hundreds of overlapping photos. The resulting prints are “highly detailed and immersive” documentation of a place and time, where the light seems almost haunted by long-past moments.
“Humanities Kansas supports projects that provide historical and cultural context to important topics that can be difficult to approach,” said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas Executive Director. “Frishman’s striking exhibition and accompanying public programs will create a space for community members to explore the images and their connection to American history.”
The Ghosts of Segregation traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions, Pasadena, California.
