School of Dance September Newsletter

The fall semester is in full swing and energy is rising in the studios. There is a buzz of excitement in the air as we prepare for our seasonal performances: The Nutcracker, A Kansas Ballet as well as Madeline’s Rescue. Read about auditions for the Nutcracker and a free dance performance at the Arts Center – join us!

Enrollment remains open through mid-October, view the current list of classes here. Don’t forget to take advantage of the New Dance Bundle Discount online and at the front desk! Families who enroll in 3 or more dance classes (simultaneously) will receive a Dance Bundle Discount of 25% off all dance class tuition. Discount can only be applied to weekly dance classes (Cannot be applied to LBT, camps/workshops, or performance production fees).

Sept. 2 | Labor Day Holiday/ NO CLASSES

Sept. 5 | Gestural Sketches Dance Performance by Julie Rothschild | 6:30-7:00 pm FREE


Gestural Sketches is a collaboration between one dancer and an assortment of porcelain objects made by artist, Liz Quan. In the main lobby of the Arts Center, Julie Rothschild will share her decade’s long practice of moving with what is present. She observes, moves, and listens to the objects and considers their relationship. A dance emerges as they are moved by each other. This is a family friendly, all-ages appropriate performance. Free to attend!


Sept. 7 | Auditions for The Nutcracker, A Kansas Ballet | 10:00-5:30 pm


1-12 grade and Adults

Calling all dancers in 1-12 grade and adults who enjoy movement to audition for Arts Center’s The Nutcracker, A Kansas Ballet. This production is based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story and set in Lawrence, Kansas during the Civil War era. This newly envisioned ballet production tells the story of how Drosselmeyer and Clara liberate the Nutcracker from the clutches of the Mouse King.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to audition time. Attending the audition is FREE, and no prepared materials are required to audition. Dancers should arrive wearing appropriate dance attire and be ready to move. In order to be considered for a role, applicants in 1st-12th grade must be actively enrolled in a dance class at any dance school/studio. There are no requirements for adults to audition.

Sept. 8 | Call-backs for The Nutcracker, A Kansas Ballet | 2:30 pm

The majority of roles will not be called back.  Call backs are for select roles only.  If you have auditioned, please be sure to check your phone and email for call back requests. Thank you!

Oct. 31 | Halloween Holiday/ No Classes after 12:00 pm

Nov. 2-3 | LBT presents Madeline’s Rescue – Mainstage

Based on Ludwig Bemelmans’ book, Lawrence Ballet Theatre presents the story of Madeline’s Rescue. When Madeline’s antics land her in the river Seine, a stray dog she befriended comes to her rescue. The 12 little girls give the dog a home where the love and adventures grow. Last year’s performance sold out, so mark your calendars now!
