The Lawrence Arts Center announces a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for An Indoor Mural Commission by The Kroger Co and Dillon Stores

- Be age 18 or over at time of application
- Be willing to meet all contractual obligations and adhere to budget and timeline
Description of Opportunity
The Lawrence Arts Center seeks a local artist to create a large-scale indoor mural commissioned by The Kroger Co and Dillon Stores. This site-specific artwork will be prominently displayed in the new Dillons at 2205 Iowa Street and celebrate the unique, unmistakable identity of Lawrence, Kansas.
The artwork will be mounted on canvas or panels that can be installed in the location specified for the artwork located prominently within the store’s vestibule. The size of the finished artwork will measure 7 ft. h. x 18 ft. w. Dillons will provide a plaque identifying the artist, artist’s city or town of residence, title and medium of the artwork, and date executed along with brief information about the artist and the artwork.
The Kroger family of stores is honored to draw from the talents of local artists to create an uplifting experience in their stores. The objective of the commissioned art program is to create a space that encourages community gathering and celebrates the spirit of the neighborhood. As a company, Kroger values honesty, diversity, inclusion, integrity, respect and safety. These values are expressed by the artwork commissioned for each store.
Project Budget
Three finalists will be selected from the applicant pool of artist qualifications submitted. Each finalist will be paid $400 to develop a conceptual proposal for the site.
The selected artist will receive a commission fee of $10,000. This amount includes all artist fees, design costs, fabrication expenses, transportation and insurance costs to deliver the artwork to the new store located at 2205 Iowa Street in fall of 2025.
Additional information will be provided to artists selected as finalists for the site.
Selection Process
Artists interested in being considered for this project must submit their qualifications on or before 11:59 p.m. on January 13, 2025. A selection committee coordinated by the Lawrence Arts Center will review artist materials and select up to three finalists to create proposals. The proposals will be reviewed by the committee and one proposal will be commissioned to create the artwork.
Anticipated Project Timeline
- Deadline for Qualification Submissions: Jan. 13, 2025
- Notify Applicants and Request Proposals from Finalists: February 17, 2025
- Finalist proposals due: March 31, 2025
- Notification of selected project: June 1, 2025

- One page Artist Bio
- Professional Resume/ CV (including Lawrence address)
- Three (3) images of previous work that demonstrate the ability to design and create large-scale artwork
- Annotated informational sheet including title, date and brief description of each image.
