Cate OConnell-Richards

Metalsmith/Jeweler

Cate Richards is a jeweler and artist originally from Providence, Rhode Island and currently residing in Lawrence, Kansas. After earning a BA in Painting and Art History from Baker University in 2012, she refashioned her studio practice to metals and has been creating art jewelry ever since. She exhibits in galleries nationally and operates her MONUMENTA retail jewelry enterprise.

Cate’s work combines traditional metalsmithing techniques with atypical, often industrial, materials to produce body objects which obscure the line between jewelry and sculpture. She looks to history and myth as platforms for discussion, investigating the space between reality and the inconceivable.

She enjoys introducing students to fundamental metalsmithing techniques and curating an experience which fosters the learning of the foundations of metalworking while embracing experimentation.
