Mike Brehm | My Ship at See

Mike Brehm’s images come about through a process of automatic drawings. This frenzied technique results in visual gibberish, and radio static. Mike makes many of these drawings and only a small percentage reach the next stage which uses ink to bring out the images hidden in the chaos of pencil strokes. Another technique he uses is drawing upside down. He does this most often when he is creating imaginary portraits. Over the years, Mike has drawn a lot of faces and they started to look alike. Drawing upside down was a way of creating new faces–by way of the “mistakes” that the process engendered.

Through his drawings and technique, Mike strives to find prophetic, misremembered, and poetic moments in life.  These are the prizes of the automatic drawing process and they arise without intention and reveal themselves to him at a later date.
