Visit the LMH Main Campus at 330 Arkansas Street to admire works by local artist Celia Smith!

Celia Smith uses acrylic paints on canvas or paper to render images from life, nature or people. Her style is representational, though not realistic, with an intent on the spirit of the model and what makes it unique. She sketches from nature and people and composes paintings that tell stories or impart feelings or ideas. Some works are landscapes that capture the essence of a place, while others are fun and whimsical. Her brilliant use of line and color captures the essence of the subject. For her, line is not used to delineate form and shape but to evoke movement and expression. Her work, while imaginative and fun, also conveys abstract feelings such as solitude, fear or happiness.

Artist Biography

Celia is a long-time resident of Lawrence and a lifelong painter. She believes that without feeling, there cannot be Art. In the words of Umut Bayramuglu, “Celia Smith is a storyteller, a narrator of life through sketches and paintings. Whether she depicts animals or plants, human beings or notable historical events, Celia captures and conveys both the spirit of her subjects and the feelings she has about them.”

Celia has a Master’s Degree in Art History from the University of Madrid in Spain, which is her country of origin. She studied drawing under a popular artist of the time there, and she has benefitted from the Lawrence Arts Center’s Life Drawing sessions for several years. Celia has exhibited widely in Kansas and surrounding States, plus the West, Colorado, Washington and Idaho. She has received many recognitions, including the Phoenix Award in Visual Arts for 2008.

Her work can be seen around Lawrence’s art events like Art in the Park, Holiday Art Fair, Bizarre Bazaar, and the Art Spaces Walk, or by appointment at her studio.
