When Roura Young paints, she is not only drawn to the forms of the landscape, such as the undulations of hills and the colors and shapes of the plants but also to the relationship between these forms. Whether she is painting wildflowers among the grasses or a large panorama, she feels the interconnection between the shapes of her subjects or the spaces between them.
When painting, Roura often thinks of the words “reach,” “push,” or “pull.” Prairie grasses stretch into space, creating the wind and a painting of air. The seed heads of Indian Grass lean towards each other, constructing an image of relationships. Big Bluestem stretches upwards, producing a feeling of growth. Focusing on the movement of her subject allows her to capture the life of the landscape.
Artist Biography
Roura Young lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with her husband, Bryan. She is a watercolor artist, working on both traditional and synthetic paper. She grew up in the Kansas City area and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Art History.
Using the unique qualities of watercolor pigments and employing several different techniques, she celebrates the underlying shapes of the prairie landscape, the structures of and spaces between native plants, and the relationship between earth and sky, form and movement.
