Welcome to the Kit Kat Club at the Lawrence Arts Center!
Thank you so much for supporting LIVE theatre by purchasing a ticket for today’s show. Cabaret is a musical that is based off the 1951 play I Am a Camera, by Jon Van Druten, which is based on the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, by Christopher Isherwood. Cabaret was turned into a movie in 1972, directed by Bob Fosse, which starred Liza Minelli, and won 8 Academy Awards, including Best Actress and Best Director. The show has since seen Broadway revivals in 1987, 1998, 2014, and is currently playing on Broadway.
Immediately you will be whisked away to Berlin and into your seat at the Kit Kat Club. The year is 1929, and we are at the end of the Weimar Republic. There was great political turmoil, economic hardships and inflation, but also it was a time of new social freedoms and a vibrant artistic scene. As a cast we have talked frequently about why this show is important, and why we have picked now to return to this classic. Its message is timeless, and timely.
Cabaret is about the dangers of apathy, and not being politically engaged in the world around you. Each character in the show falls victim to their inaction, or indifference to the world around them despite the warnings and red flags that they see. Each has their own excuse or reason for not getting involved, and they feel like the current political issues have nothing to do with them, until they have to make difficult choices. Do they fight, flee their homes, or weather the oncoming storm in hope that it will soon pass?
The performers, musicians and crew have worked at a lightning pace to create this show in just 17 days. Their skills and passion are beyond words, and they have pushed our creativity each day.
Thank you to the leadership that brought this show to life: Gwentessa, Rachel, Ric, Jen, Maya and our interns, Katie (KP), and Harper. Big thanks to Samaria, Lexey, Elliot, Josiah and Elizabeth for their support. Finally, a big thank you to all the families, caregivers and audience members. We could not do this without all of you! We hope you enjoy the journey of Cabaret.
Much Love,
Justin Harbaugh
