Matilda was first commissioned and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 9 November 2010. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End of London on 25 October 2011 and received its US premiere at the Schubert Theatre, Broadway, USA on 4 March 2013.

Director’s Welcome

Welcome and thank you for attending Matilda the Musical. This show has been a wonderful challenge to bring to life and could not have happened without the support and efforts of the production team, actors, volunteers, and support from the community.

Each time I take on a show, I ask myself a question, “Why now?” For me, the answers come in waves. As we journey through Matilda’s world I am constantly reminded of her persistent efforts to right the wrongs in her life. I think about how impressionable young people are, and how they always listen and absorb information. I believe Matilda is a character who cannot be their true self in their home environment, but finds acceptance and comfort through her love of reading, new found friends, and her safe places and people, Miss Honey and Mrs. Phelps. Having that safe space is important for growing up, and is important for grown-up people.

Working on Matilda with this cast has been the bright spot in my day, everyday. I want to thank this incredible cast for pouring their love of theatre, and specifically this show into rehearsals and performances. Thank you to our sponsors, community supporters and volunteers.
