
Wabwila Mugala
2025-26 Printmaking Artist in Residence
Mugala is a Zambian born interdisciplinary artist with a focus on print processes grounded in design and textiles. She received her BFA in New Media and Design at UNC Greensboro and MFA in Printmaking from Arizona State University (2025). Her practice engages with the call-and-response within the African diaspora through her own visual glossary functioning as pattern, design and language. Recent shows and exhibitions include her solo exhibition In the Fold (2025) in Arizona and Of Natal Lands (2024) in South Carolina. She has been featured in Southwest Contemporary Magazine: Radical Futures (Volume 10) and AIGA Charlotte.

In this course, students will learn the basics of the papermaking process, and then experiment with various techniques including pulp painting, sizing, and dyeing the sheets of paper they make.

Create a colossal woodcut and print it using a steamroller! Blocks are carved over the course two months utilizing both traditional hand tools, electric carvers, saws and routers; carve your own or team-up with a friend. The course will culminate in a public printing event during the Art Tougeau block party.
