Matthew Willie Garcia was born and raised in Tulare, CA. He received a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and is currently an M.F.A. Candidate in Printmaking at the University of Kansas. Matthew lives and works between Kansas City, MO, and Lawrence, KS. He is as a queer EXTRA-dimensional explorer, and often finds himself thinking about Lisa Frank, Star Trek Voyager, Ru Pauls Drag Race and the curvature of space-time.

Spend a week learning traditional Mokuhanga carving and printing techniques. This highly technical class will allow the students to focus and hone their carving and printing skills. Prior experience with Mokuhanga strongly encouraged.

This two-day workshop explores the history and expressive potential of sumi ink drawing. Participants will engage with both traditional and experimental techniques, including suminagashi (Japanese marbling), and create large-scale sumi ink compositions. This hands-on experience fosters creative exploration while honoring the rich tradition of sumi-e painting.
