Call for Artists: The Zinn Youth Writer’s Project

Project Details:

  • When: Mid March –April 2026
  • Where: Lawrence Arts Center and Liberty Memorial Central Middle School
  • Stipend: $1,800

Description of Opportunity
The Lawrence Arts Center seek an author, poet, or creative writer to mentor 7th-grade English Language Arts students at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School as part of the Zinn Writing Project.

The Zinn Writing Project is an inspiring opportunity for artists to collaborate with an English Language Arts teacher to design and lead a creative writing project that provides students with insights into personal and professional writing practices.

The project will take place over several weeks between Mid-March and April 2026. The selected artist will develop project ideas with input from the Lawrence Arts Center Director of Visual Arts and the Liberty Memorial Central Middle School English Language Arts teacher. The artist will visit the classroom up to five times during the creative process to work directly with students as they develop their writings, culminating in a finished product such as a publication, video recital, visual artwork, or another tangible outcome.

Anticipated Project Timeline:

  • Deadline for application submissions: Friday, February 13, 2026
  • Notification of interview opportunities: Monday, February 16, 2026
  • Artist selection: Friday, February 20, 2026
  • Develop project objectives with selected artist: February 23-27, 2026
  • Mentorship with students: March 16–April 17, 2026
    (The artist will meet with students up to five times within this timeframe.)

Artists must submit the following information by email to Kathryn Combs, Interim Director of Visual Arts studiomanager@lawrenceartscenter.org no later than Friday, February 13, 2026.

  1. A one-page artist bio
  2. Professional resume/CV
  3. Three (3) writing samples that reflect the writer’s ideas or areas of interest

Position requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be 18 or older at the time of application
  • Be willing to meet all contractual obligations and adhere to budget and timeline
  • Have professional writing experience
  • Have some availability during daytime hours Monday–Friday
