Show Up, Do Art: Free Family Art Experiences for 2019

Opening this Friday, artist Tara Moorman’s exhibition Letters to my Ancestors features a family tree of watercolor portraiture. Dense with pattern and detail, the work reveals the richness of both period clothing and family history.

Moorman explains the history of the project:

When my mother, Patty Nation Fisher, of Erie, Kansas passed away, I inherited a large cache of old family photos and was immediately struck with the idea of bringing my relatives “back to life.” At the time, it was a way for me to honor my mother and to keep the family memories alive. The photos became an invitation to merge my art with my love of family, history, and storytelling. I painted their spiritual light with an aura of rainbow colors, to create an etheric atmosphere, at the same time showcasing their period clothes, beautifully patterned dresses, boots, hats, and cars.

To celebrate our 2019 exhibitions, we’ve developed Free Family Art Experiences. Beginning with “Letters to My Ancestors: Watercolors of Tara Moorman”, Free Family Art Experiences will provide a guided look into our galleries and accompanying art projects for attendees of all ages. Visit the Lawrence Arts Center this Saturday, January 12th for our inaugural event: Wearables. Beginning at 10:00 AM, participants will examine how fashion and wearable items communicate both time period and personal identity within our gallery and respond by crafting their own wearable takeaway fashions!
