Performing Arts this July: So Many Shows and One Big Audition!

Hello and Happy July!

We are only halfway through our fantastic Summer Youth Theatre season. Our theme this summer is Claim Your Power and we invite you to stop by this month and see what we’ve been up to!

First up in July is SYT Novice: The Myth of Perseus with performances on one day only on July 13. Join Perseus, son of Danae and Zeus, on his heroic quests through Greek mythology and his epic battle with Medusa. Featuring 4th-6th graders, this performance occurs at our satellite space, Studio 720, at 720 E 9th St. #8.

Next up is SYT Junior: The Odyssey: By Thespis and the Peloponnesian Midwest Regional Third Place Chorus on July 18-20. The Peloponnesian Midwest Regional Chorus is tired of placing last in every competition with their ho-hum renditions of heroic myths. Enter Thespis with a risky idea to cure the Chorus’s recitation-related woes: a full theatrical production! This production features the talents of our 6th-8th graders. This play is written by Will Averill and will be directed by visiting guest artist Daniel Bird Tobin. As an added bonus, Daniel will perform the one man show, An Iliad, on July 7 at 3pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an internationally performed production of Homer’s classic right here in Lawrence, KS!

Finally, we end our season with SYT Senior: Chicago on July 25-28. In Roaring Twenties Chicago, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream: fame, fortune, and acquittal. Check out our June 8th-12th graders (and our tech crew) above in the featured photo of SYT Senior: All In The Timing. Join us in July to see more from our senior performers!

Last, but not least…calling all Actors, Singers, and Dancers ages 8 and up for our fall musical, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka! Join us for auditions on July 13th and check out our audition announcement here for all the details.
