DESCRIPTION:Heinrich Toh’s work investigates the sense of longing and assimilation that comes from travel and relocation. Memories are fleeting with the ongoing integration into his immediate environment, driving him to seek what was once familiar. Contrasting Eastern and Western sensibility, Toh’s work reflects layered and overlapping cultural elements while synthesizing the past with the present. The reinterpretation of Floral Chinese brocade patterns, alongside recent imagery of vast open landscapes from his travels, informs his sense of connection to his cultural history, definition of home and shifting mindscape. The process of his work combines several printmaking techniques, including collagraphs, monotypes, and paper-lithography. Toh’s work is hand printed, with multiple runs through an etching press, resulting in rich layers of color, pattern and imagery. Each monoprint is a unique one-of-a-kind work on paper, with no editions.
