DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Japanese Calligraphy artist Eri F. Luman! Eri will be giving a free demonstration of her Japanese Calligraphy technique to share with the Lawrence Community. Thank you to our friends at Bodhi Tree Holistic Healing for bringing Eri to Lawrence! About the Artist Born and raised in Japan, Eri began studying Japanese Calligraphy at the age of seven. One day, while moving her brush naturally and without thought, she experienced a quiet realization: calligraphy itself was meditation. That moment became the beginning of her path. Today, she shares this ancient art as a contemplative practice through what she calls “Meditation Calligraphy,” inviting others into stillness and self-discovery. Rooted in healing traditions, Eri is also a published author and a Jikiden Reiki teacher. During her 15-year career as a reporter for a Japanese newspaper, she interviewed over 100 individuals—an experience that inspired her to develop Narrative Healing. Now based in Oregon, she continues to teach and explore the intersection of art, presence, and transformation. What is Meditation Calligraphy? Japanese calligraphy is a culture in pursuit of perfectly beautiful characters. In this pursuit of beauty, emphasis is placed on the results. However, in Eri's eyes, calligraphy is much more than that. There is something more significant than the results. Calligraphy is the way to meditation. In the moment that you connect with the movement of the brush, your spirit pours forth, and you feel the convergence of this life energy. The feeling of oneness between the brush and self emerges from a state of nothingness and creates the feeling of eternity in that moment. In this connection with the moment, you will touch your inner soul through unrestrained self-expression. Meditation Calligraphy is a time of reunion with yourself, yet unknown to you. Transcending time and space, the purpose of this way is to become acquainted with the forgotten inner self. Can't make this event? Eri will be giving a hands-on workshop at The Merc Co-Op on Saturday, March 14, at 4 pm.
