DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence Arts Center invites artists to submit artwork that is 8 inches by 8 inches. This call for entries encourages both established and emerging artists to submit. Submissions are open to any medium in the stated size perimeter. Applicants can enter up to 3 pieces for $25. Works selected to be exhibited are not required to be for sale. We are incredibly excited to announce that our 8 x 8 juror will be the incomparable, vanessa german! <figure id="attachment_13799" class="thumbnail wp-captionalignnone"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-13799" src="https://lawrenceartscenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/VG_lower-res-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" /></figure>   vanessa german is a self-taught citizen artist working across sculpture, performance, communal rituals, immersive installation, and photography, in order to repair and reshape disrupted systems, spaces, and connections. The artist’s practice proposes new models for social healing, utilizing creativity and tenderness as vital forces to reckon with the historical and ongoing catastrophes of structural racism, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, resource extraction, and misogynoir. A visual storyteller, german utilizes assemblage and mixed media, combining locally found objects to build protective ritualistic structures known as her power figures. Modeled on Congolese Nkisi sculptures and drawing on folk art practices, they are embellished with materials including beading, glass, fabric, and sculpted wood, and come into existence at the axis on which Black power, spirituality, mysticism, and feminism converge. First Prize | $1000 Second Prize | $500 Third Prize | $250 <h6>Application Requirements</h6> <ul> <li>A maximum of 3 original works may be entered for jurying.</li> <li>Submit one JPEG image per piece entered. File size may be no more than 5 MB.</li> <li><strong>This exhibition is for wall-mounted works only. <span style="color: #ed1c24;">Artwork must be 8 inches in width and height, including frame (framing not required).</span></strong> <ul> <li>For prints and loose hanging pieces, we will be using a magnet system. Paper should be strong enough to withstand this method or be reinforced in the upper left and right-hand corners.</li> </ul> </li> <li>Artwork must be ready to hang and sturdy enough for normal handling.  Works must be wall-ready.</li> <li>Entries must be submitted through the Slideroom portal.</li> <li>Applicants must be 18 or over.</li> </ul> Images of accepted works may be used at the sole discretion of the Lawrence Arts Center for promotional purposes, including but not limited to the invitation, website usage, or on a subsequent year’s prospectus. The image will include artist attribution whenever possible.
