Blending the boundaries of contemporary studio practice and traditional processes.
2022/2023 Printmaking Artist in Residence
Printmaking processes allow Taro Takizawa to lay each color seen in his prints in separate layers. Layer by layer, Taro develops his work, building up each color layer by printing on top of the previous layer. The audience is only shown the finished pieces rather than the entire printmaking process. The finished pieces reveal only a portion of the work Taro spent on the matrix, a block, plate or a stone, hiding what could be the most exciting part of his studio practice.
Our perspectives on the lives of others have similar perceptions, most of the time seeing the surface of someone’s life until we take a deep dive and invest time and energy to get to know someone. Through the body of work Taro has created during the residency program at the Lawrence Arts Center, he would like to encourage visitors to imagine peeling back the layers of each piece and develop an awareness of what it takes to develop the artwork, the undercurrent, that might be different from what you see, and what’s visible could just be the tip of the iceberg.
