Free State Story Slam Celebrates 10 Years of Telling Tales
Free State Story Slam hit a milestone this season as the local live storytelling event … [more]
Stay safe and stay home, slammers, as this time around, the stories are coming to YOU. The October slam invites you to bring tales of poor judgment. Perhaps something that started out well but went completely off the rails. Or maybe a plan that just didn’t pan out? The storyline is up to you! Get your favorite beverage ready and join us for music, stories and community. Digital happy hour and music start at 7:15 pm. Slam starts at 7:35 pm.
Celebrating 10 years at the Lawrence Arts Center, Story Slam brings together local, regional, and sometimes national storytellers who share true stories filled with humor, pain, joy, terror, love and every emotion in between. No need to make a reservation; storytellers register upon arrival. While originally modeled after story telling programs like The Moth, Lawrence’s version includes prepared stories sometimes intermingled with impromptu stories inspired as the live event unfolds.
Stories are approximately five to eight minutes long, and (in pre-pandemic times) are told on the main stage. The event is not a competition, but at evening’s end, the audience will vote for a handful of favorites of the night. Those storytellers are invited to tell a new story at the season-ending “Grand Slam.”
