Matthew Lord | The Elevator Project

September 27, 5 to 9 pm
September 28, 10 am to 4 pm

Lawrence Arts Center, Elevator

The Elevator Project is an art installation by 2019 Project-based Artist in Residence Matthew Lord that blends printmaking and performance and takes place between the floors of the Lawrence Arts Center. This pop-up gallery will display works with distinct prairie iconography combined with surrealistic flourishes. The artist will be on hand, serving as a guide to explain his philosophy and methods of creating art—all in the span of an elevator ride.

This Project-Based Residency is generously supported by Linda Bailey.

A Banner Day

September 20 – October 21

Lawrence Arts Center, Lower Lobby Gallery

Flags unite and galvanize the voices of a collective. The movements of the past had designers like Betsy Ross, David Hammons, Richard Chavez, and Gilbert Baker who produced flags that came to symbolize their causes. Who will create the standards that wave above the protesters of today and tomorrow? A Banner Day is a collaborative exhibition featuring protest flags and banners composed from relief and screenprints on repurposed fabrics. Contributions to the show come from pieces made by project organizers, student, and community activists in print on fabric and sewing workshops at Catapult Press in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Freedom of speech is enabled by the self publication skills workshop attendees gained. The exhibition serves as a regional outreach with artists and activists in Kansas.

Blake and Hannah March Sanders are artists and educators working collaboratively as Orange Barrel Industries, a creative and curatorial partnership that travels around the country presenting lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and demonstrations in printmaking, drawing, and fiber art installation. Recent engagements include a relief printing on fabric workshop summer 2017 at Frogman’s Print Workshop. Their latest exhibitions include solo shows at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL; the St. Louis Artist’s Guild; and University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, AR. Recently they were visiting artists at Kansas City Art Institute, University of South Alabama, and Clemson University. They currently teach foundations and printmaking at Southeast Missouri State University, where Hannah is an Assistant Professor.
