LOCATION CHANGE! This exhibition will be held at Lawrence Visitors Center, 812 Massachusetts Street in Downtown Lawrence.

Monday through Saturday – 10 AM to 6 PM
Sunday – 10 AM to 3 PM

Since the earliest days of its development by James Naismith, basketball has reinvented itself repeatedly. This reinvention is a necessary and crucial process that allows for players and fans alike to evolve alongside it. The Need of a New Game is a contemporary look at the value and trajectory of basketball from the perspective of a fan and artist. Created in response both to the legacy of the game and the game as it continues to exist in Lawrence, KS, Abigail Smithson contributes her own understanding of basketball through visual art, opening a space to consider the value of this cultural phenomenon from an alternative viewpoint.

Final Friday Opening Reception February 28  |  5-9 PM

During Final Friday, Smithson will be in the lobby conducting three-minute, one on one interviews with people about their relationship with basketball in order to create a collective narrative that includes the various ways people engage with the game in Lawrence. These short interviews will then be featured on Smithson’s podcast Dear Adam Silver.

Example questions include:
Does basketball matter to you?
How has basketball impacted your life?
What does it mean to be a good fan?
What do you think basketball means for the town of Lawrence?
