This exhibition is the culmination of Johanna Winter’s time as the 2018-19 Printmaking Artist in Residence at the Lawrence Arts Center.
{ An endling is the last known of a species. }
{ An ENDLNG is our protagonist resisting her fate to come undone. }
ENDLNG is a puppet-figure performance, installation, and sound piece that proposes a narrative in which female desire and agency demand to be witnessed. Our protagonist confronts her burdensome longing and disappointment through a merging of puppetry, gesture, language, and ritual. Bolstered by her puppeteer minders as she resists a deteriorating condition, the ENDLNG glimpses a moment of renewal and resilience through a shadow fever-dream.
Using printmaking, marionettes, shadow theatre, sound, and invented phonetics, ENDLNG reclaims the fear of being alone through an account of what it means to be loved and be seen.
