Joelle Ford’s first one-person show, Kansas Collections, was exhibited at the Lawrence Arts Center in 2008. It was composed of items found and collected throughout the state. Almost ten years have passed, and she has continued to create the same type of work utilizing materials not previously shown. New projects and an installation have been made specifically for this show. Hidden Talents is the largest work in the show at forty feet long and consisting of more than 1,600 vintage crocheted pot holders. Ford is intrigued by the different patterns and colors used to create these pot holders, who made them and why. Ford wants the viewer to gain an appreciation for found objects and find humor in her work, which is environmentally friendly mixed media made to appeal to a wide range of audiences. The underlying materials are surprising, and visitors will see that making art can take many paths.
