Jody Boyer, Russ Nordman | Mechanical & Botanical
July 26 @ 5:00 pm - August 24 @ 9:00 pm | FREE
Jody Boyer’s work for this exhibition was made this summer in her own backyard. As an artist and naturalist, she is interested in the possibilities and tensions between human intervention and nature. Using material from her own wild backyard, where she allowed plant life to grow as it would without intervention, Boyer has created unique wet cyanotype photograms to showcase plants typically vilified and removed from a well-maintained urban forest or garden. Her process involved solar cooking plant material and adding acid during exposure to achieve varied photographic results. The resulting artworks exist in the liminal space between scientific artifacts, the painterly rendering of an unseen world of chemical reactions and the artist’s voice.
Russ Nordman presents work from his two Combines series. In Iowa Combines, he travels across Iowa to photograph the distinct characteristics of each county. His second series, Mechanical Combines, explores a fantastical re-interpretation of the mechanics of historic vehicles, machinery, and tools.
