Free Festival Flicks at Five presented pairs of short films in a virtual social media screening room for our audiences to engage with on social media. Here were some of our selections for you to enjoy:

1) Back to Film School

The Lift by Robert Zemeckis

Why this film?
It’s a great example of visual storytelling and three-act screenplay structure. Setting up the daily routine, inciting incident that disrupts the norm, and a satisfying resolution.

Peel by Jane Campion

Why this film?
We love the compressed timeline, battle of wills and character dynamics in this triangle. The sound design and shot composition make you feel the tension of any family road trip.

2) Family Friendly Odeon

Duck Amuck by Chuck Jones

Why this film?
It’s a post-modern classic that pits character against environment. Westworld fans, you’ll love this one.

Vincent by Tim Burton

Why this film?
The beautifully macabre animation hits all the right notes of humor and pathos (although the Tower of Doom might just hit a little close to home these days)…

3) Silent Thunder

The Motorist by Robert Paul

Why this film?
The camera tricks and set pieces are magical and beautifully paced. Melies fans, rejoice!

Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren

Why this film?
While not made in the silent era, this accessible experimental film blends dream and reality without the use of dialogue in a masterful use of camera angles and visual motifs.
