Join us for an evening of live Tango music and dancing as Kansas City Tango ensemble Cucharada brings its take on the immortal Argentine style to Lawrence. Cucharada is tango without borders. From the birth of Tango in the Mar del Plata region of South America on the border of Uruguay and Argentina to its rebirth in the United States, Kansas City Tango ensemble Cucharada will take the listener through the evolution of this music from its early days in the late 19th century until today. Having studied under some of this generation’s greatest Tango instrumentalists, the group explores the connections between dance and concert material. A rare midwestern treat as this is the only group of its style in the greater KC-metro area.
Kansas City Tango group Cucharada has been performing in the Midwest regularly — as well as a few international dates occasionally — since 2012. The ensemble has a broad interest in this style of music as it draws from many different eras and composers. Co-leaders Sean Mawhirter and Guy Montes began this group after discovering Astor Piazzolla’s ‘Histoire du Tango’ (written for flute and guitar) as well as attending (former music group) Tango Lorca’s performances and their weekly dance events at the now-defunct Fedora restaurant in the Kansas City Country Club Plaza. After traveling to Buenos Aires to study under some of today’s finest Tango musicians, Cucharada is intent on spreading the gospel to those dedicated to this social art form as well as those who have yet to be reached by its sound.
Global Cafe was founded in 2007 by Rafael and Kate Gonzalez. Kate is a native Kansan, born in Lawrence and raised in rural Douglas County. Rafael was born in the Canary Islands and raised in Venezuela. Rafael and Kate met in Taos, New Mexico where they fell in love with each other and Southwestern food! Together they have two daughters Sofia 13, Isabella 9, a dog Coco, a cat Guy and 5 chickens.
They return every year to New Mexico in late summer for the green chile harvest and bring back hundreds of pounds of green chiles which they roast in their chile roaster and freeze for the year. They source as much food as they can through local farmers and producers. Currently, many items such as eggs, milk, chorizo, tomatoes, zucchini, peaches, onions, eggplant, locally roasted coffee, baked goods, kombucha are all coming from local purveyors.
Global Cafe offers made from scratch food that is healthy and delicious! All of their food is globally influenced by our own cultures, travels, and love of food. After remodeling in the late fall of 2017, Global Cafe now offers dinner service and a full bar Thursday through Saturday. Chef Manuel Perera creates the evening menu and brings his love and knowledge of Italian food. Most Friday evenings you can enjoy live music at Global Cafe!
