School District Talent Show Sees Arts Center Students Among Acts

Lawrence Arts Center alums will be center stage next week during the Lawrence School Foundation’s annual “Ovation!” talent show.

The Lawrence Ballet Theatre will perform two sections from Jerel Hilding’s piece, Whims. Rose Kennedy, a Lawrence High School freshman and veteran of Arts Center theater, dance and visual arts, will be performing a stand-up comedy routine. Middle and high school students throughout the USD 497 Lawrence school district were selected to perform through a virtual audition process.

LBT Artistic Director Cynthia Crews said it was an honor for the Arts Center dancers to be selected to participate in the annual program.

“LBT dancers are excited for the opportunity to perform on the beautiful Lied Center stage and to connect with other talented youth artists in Lawrence,” she said.

The LBT dance and Rose’s comedy performance are among only 12 that were selected for the showcase. The acts, which also include instrumentalists, singers, aerialists, and a filmmaker, were recorded performing on stage at the Lied Center of Kansas. The full show will premier virtually online at 7pm Friday, February 12, on Vimeo.

This is the fifth annual “Ovation!” talent show, and the first to be presented virtually online by the Lied Center. Tickets are not required, but donations are encouraged. All proceeds of the performance benefit the Lawrence Schools Foundation, an organization that provides resources that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and enhance opportunities for all students, educators, and staff in Lawrence Public Schools.
