Adult Visual Arts: Something for everyone in October!

This October we have a line-up that will knock your socks off! Dip your fingers into some clay, make your own holiday cards, get your stitch-fix, cook a delicious dinner, get the most out of your photos, find power in your words, or adorn yourself with fabulous jewelry. We have something for everyone, so enroll today!

Intermediate Digital Photography with Ann Dean – Virtual

Thursday, October 1st – November 5th, 6:00pm – 8:00pm

This virtual class is for the more experienced photographer who already understands the basic concepts of the DSLR camera, exposure and composition, or who has taken my Intro course. Fine-tune your skills and become more comfortable with creative manual exposure modes and flash photography. A tripod, multiple lenses and external flash would be helpful but are not mandatory.

Lost Wax Carving with Rachel Sudlow – Virtual

 

Wednesday, October 7th – October 28th, 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Students will carve wax to create small items that will be cast in bronze or silver. A supply kit will include the basic tools students will need for the carving. No experience required.

This class has a non-refundable supply kit fee included of $40. Instructions on how to pick up the kit will be sent out before the classstarts. Students will be able to drop of pieces for casting.

Intro to Ceramics with Shantel Wright – In-Person

Thursday, October 8th – December 3rd, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

This course will introduce and explore hand-building and wheel throwing basics. Shantel will demonstrate techniques essential to each process (slab, coil, extruding), as well as options for combining these “separate” forms of making – creating small sprig molds, using stencils and found texture devices, and the construction of hybrid forms from thrown and hand-built parts.

This class will pivot to a virtual form if necessary and students will be issued supply kits if this happens. A $40 supply kit fee is included in the price of the class.

Alternative Adornment with Carly Kimbrough – Virtual

Monday, October 12th – December 7th, 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Learn how to make jewelry from home using found objects, paper, natural materials and a few basic supplies.

Card Party with Matthew Willie Garcia – Virtual

Monday, October 19th – November 30th, 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Illustrative letters, illuminated manuscripts, and pictorial postcards galore! Move the gallery into the mailbox with printmaking for the postal system. This relief printmaking class will focus on creating your own stamps, wax signets, and custom lettering for your own cards and stationary, all from your living room!

Sewcial Justice Garments with Allison Sheldon – Virtual

Tuesday, October 20th – December 1st, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

In the Sewical Justice Garment, we will explore how clothing has been used both historically and concurrently as a powerful tool of protest. Through our study and open discussions, we will learn skills to embellish, alter, and preserve our clothing to integrate our activism with our outfits and use our clothing as a tool to inspire conversation and social change. Some sewing experience may be helpful, isn’t necessary.

Cooking Class: Fall Risotto Dinner with Louis Wigen-Toccalino – Virtual

Friday, October 23rd, 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Chef Luigi from the Cellar Door Cafe hosts a culinary class of his Grandma’s Italian risotto. Cook along to make dinner for 2. The menu consists of Butternut Squash Risotto, Sherry Roasted Brussel Sprouts, and a Pear and Almond Tart for dessert. We’ll make dinner step by step, answer questions as we go, and swap stories along the way.

This class has a non-refundable dinner kit fee of $40 (for ingredients!). The meal kit will include everything needed for dinner, except for the most basics (olive oil, salt & pepper). Kits will be available to pickup the day before at the Cellar Door, optional wine pairing also available by the bottle for $24 at time of pickup. Instructions will be emailed out ahead of time.

Free as a Word with Mary Wharff – In-Person

Saturday, October 24th – December 5th, 1:30pm – 3:30pm

Words are to writing as color is to painting, and in this class, we’ll turn words upside-down, sideways, inside-out and outside-in to create fresh and startling writing. We’ll push definition, practice rhythm, play with appearance and invent expression even we don’t expect. Classes include discussion, exercises and voluntary sharing.

Please bring pen and paper or laptop.
