A few reminders about December performances…
Join us for The Nutcracker: A Kansas Ballet running December 13-15 and 20-22. Experience the sensation and charm of the Lawrence Arts Center’s Nutcracker production. A winter family favorite, this ballet is based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story and set in Kansas during the civil war. Witness the magic and wonder of this story as Drosselmeyer and Clara defeat the Mouse King and liberate the Nutcracker from his enchanted form.
Our Story Slam series is on hiatus for the month of December, but will pick back up on Friday, January 10th with the theme “Empty.” Live music begins at 7 pm and the slam starts at 7:30 pm. Never the same story, or evening, twice.
Mark your calendars for our winter/spring season!
Atmosphere January 10-February 22, 2020
Finding its home in the middle exhibition gallery, Atmosphere is the newest event in the Theatre and Dance for the Very young program. This work is a five-week long installation and a recurring performance set inside the installation. The interactive (and touchable!) installation, designed by guest artist Sharon McCaman, will be open to the public from January 10 through February 22 for free. The ticketed performances of Atmosphere feature live music, dancing, and exploration and will occur at select times each week starting January 17th. Come explore clouds, wind, light, and rain in this delightful performance for the very young (and curious folks of all ages)!
The Vagina Monologues: Liberated Sisters February 13-15, 2020
The Vagina Monologues: Liberated Sisters is a performance that tells the stories of women: white, black, trans, Native American, East Asian, and others. We will share excerpts from Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues plus original music, dance, and monologues inspired by local women. Sparking many movements across the globe, Ensler’s work continues to activate change by confronting the silence surrounding vaginas and sexuality as well as creating spaces for marginalized voices to share their stories. Through the arts’ transformative power, this performance will revolutionize people’s perspectives of what they know women to be.
The Snow Queen February 21-22 & 28-29, 2020
The Snow Queen will perform February 21, 22, 28, and 29! Join us for a brand new collaboration between Performing Arts & the School of Dance as the Lawrence Arts Center revives the history and inspiring story of the Snow Queen through dance, song, and live orchestration. Based on the same Hans Christian Andersen story that inspired the hit Disney movie, Frozen, the story centers on the struggle between good and evil as taken on by young heroine, Gerda. Weaving together dramatic and comic scenes and dances performed by an 11-piece orchestra, Gerda embarks on a quest to save her playmate, braving sorceresses, robbers, and the Snow Queen in order to rekindle Kai’s inner flame of kindness.
The Silent One; A Climate Change Street Opera May 1-3, 2020
The Silent One is a mobile audience journey through an original art installation inspired and led by Environmental Art Warrior, Memuco. The exploration begins with a colorful parade of live singers, dancers, and musicians, as they guide potential new warriors on a journey through the brink of extinction. Live performance vignettes populate each installation on the quest to halt the Climate Crisis. Audience members will experience a mixture of dance, opera, concert, story, and spectacle steeped in Mexican, Meso-American, African, and Greek music and mythology as The Silent One ultimately faces Talos, the Greek Cyborg of Greed. Read more about Memuco and the Silent One here.
