Performing Arts this May: Dreaming About SYT

Hello and Happy May! We had our Summer Youth Theatre auditions and are delighted to share our cast lists with you.

We are wrapping up our winter/spring season with our Story Slam series on Friday, May 10th with the finale, Grand Slam! Live music begins at 7 pm and the slam starts at 7:30 pm. Never the same story, or evening, twice. After this round, Story Slam will take a summer hiatus and begin again in September.

Check out our SYT season below, featuring over 200 students!

First up in June is SYT Novice: Disney’s The Jungle Book KIDS. Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle.

Next up is SYT Junior: Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr. Mary Poppins, a “practically perfect” nanny, arrives at Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane and bursts into the lives of the three Banks children. With patience, kindness, and a little bit of magic, Mary helps their family set things right.

Finishing June, we have SYT Senior: All in the Timing. This collection of one-act absurdist plays culminates with the story of how Leon Trotsky spent a whole day with a mountain climber’s axe in his head before he died. We will also be featuring original student work.

In July, we kick things off with SYT Novice: The Myth of Perseus. Join Perseus, son of Danae and Zeus, on his heroic quests through Greek mythology and his epic battle with Medusa.

Next up is SYT Junior: The Odyssey: By Thespis and the Peloponnesian Midwest Regional Third Place Chorus. The Peloponnesian Midwest Regional Chorus is tired of placing last in every competition with their ho-hum renditions of heroic myths. Enter Thespis with a risky idea to cure the Chorus’s recitation-related woes: a full theatrical production!

Finally, we end our season with SYT Senior: Chicago. In Roaring Twenties Chicago, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream: fame, fortune, and acquittal.
