Lawrence Magazine presents the Langston Hughes Spoken Word Prize for Douglas County High School students.
Part of the official annual Langston Hughes Creative Writing Awards, this first-year prize pays tribute to the work of Langston Hughes and recognizes young talent with a $400 cash prize.
DEADLINE JANUARY 15, 2019
- Submissions: Contestants must submit an audio or video file of spoken word performance with 1) reading of one original composition and 2) reading of a Langston Hughes poem (or portions of a larger work). Total time should not exceed 7 minutes. Submissions should be emailed to email@example.com. DEADLINE IS JAN. 15.
- Winners: One first-place winner will be chosen and receive a prize of $300. Two second-place winners will each receive a prize of $50. The original composition portion of the winning submissions are considered for publication in Lawrence Magazine. The winner is invited to perform at the annual Langston Hughes Creative Writing Award ceremony in Lawrence on February 1.
- Entry Fee: None
- Eligibility: Open to high school students with residence in Douglas County, Kansas.
- Selection Committe: Nadia Imafidon (chair), Martinez Hilliard, Jameelah Jones, Eric McHenry, Valerie Mendoza and Leah Sewell. The committee reserves the right to not award a prize.
