Every year, the Lawrence Arts Center features dozens of visiting artists who come to speak, exhibit, demo, teach, and preform for our community. We always follow their careers with interest and love to share their continuing accomplishments!
One of our 2016 Ceramics Symposium demonstrating artists Roberto Lugo was named a 2016 USA Barr Fellow in the field of Craft by United States Artists. This prestigious award celebrates innovation in creative fields and includes a $50,000 prize.
On the subject of United States Artist Fellows, Indigenous Art Collective Postcommodity member and multi-disciplinary artist Raven Chacon was also recently named a USA Distinguished Fellow in the field of Music. In 2011 we welcomed Postcommodity to The Lawrence Arts Center for their solo exhibition The Night is Filled With the Harmonics of Suburban Dreams. A video of their installation in our large gallery can be seen here.
Recent visiting artist Vanessa German’s show i am armed. i am an army at the Pavel Zoubok gallery in NYC was recently reviewed in Hyperallergic. Vanessa visited us this month to perform spoken word and give an INSIGHT ArtTalk about her inspirations and community-based practice.
i am armed. i am an army features 21 of German’s female power figures. Currently, we are hosting two of these sculptures in our large gallery “Premium Soda Crackers” and “Sho Nuff Black Madonna for Good Love and the Blues and Healing of the Soul” for the PLATFORM exhibition. PLATFORM will be on view through January 7th, 2017.
Our sincerest congratulations to Roberto, Raven, and Vanessa! We can’t wait to see what you do next!
