Lately, if you have looked toward the sky in front of our building at 940 New Hampshire Street, you might have noticed a change. We have a new light box design! This one was created by local artist Alicia Kelly. Titled Swing It, Shake It, Make It, it features Kelly’s signature intricate cut paper style. 2-3 times a year, our Exhibitions team commissions a local artist to design a piece for our light box, which is then installed and lit up for Lawrence to see.
Alicia Kelly was born and raised among the red dirt and wildflowers of Northeastern Oklahoma. Her love of paper developed alongside her study of various printing processes and pattern making which lead her to the meditative practice of paper-cutting. Alicia’s cut paper installations pay homage to the old rituals of domestic pattern making and crafts within women circles, while introducing a dream-like paper lace filled world, in which the viewer can interact with.
