Summer Youth Theatre
For over 35 years, the Lawrence Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theatre has provided intensive training in all aspects of dramatic theatre. Using Broadway musicals, classical dramas, and original works, students learn by doing. Performers receive training from visiting and resident artists: professional directors, musical designers, stage managers, choreographers, actors, and dancers.
Students may also choose to participate through our technical theatre track, focusing on making summer productions happen from behind the scenes. Students build, paint, learn sound, lights, props, stage management and run performances as crew and crew chiefs.
The benefits of performance education are many. Watching and participating in theatre fosters literacy, stimulates interest in a wide variety of subjects, introduces diverse cultures and characters, and encourages compassion and tolerance. Children who participate in theatre classes and performances are often more at ease in public speaking and tend to be more comfortable communicating ideas and opinions with others, including adults. Theatre is a great place for kids to gain self-confidence and a feeling of acceptance. Studies show that kids who are involved in drama and music do better in math, reading, history, geography and citizenship.
