Lawrence Dance Intensives: Summer Ballet 2018

A collaboration between the Lawrence Arts Center and the University of Kansas Department of Theatre and Dance, this two-week ballet intensive provides dancers with world class instruction by accomplished faculty, guest artists, and choreographers in the KU dance studios.

Full Intensive students have the option of staying in dormitories on KU’s beautiful campus. To apply, students must be 12-18 years old, and dancing at an Intermediate/Advanced level with at least 2 years of prior dance experience.

ull Intensive: Mon-Fri, June 4-15, 9AM-4PM, 2 wks

Tuition without housing: $625 / SU-DYLDIFC

 

Tuition with housing : $1,500 / SU-DYLDIF (includes meals & linens)

 

Half Intensive: Mon-Fri, June 4-8, 9AM-2:30PM, 1 wk

Tuition : $375 / SU-DYLDIH (housing available for full intensive only)

REQUIREMENTS: No audition required to attendant this intensive! Students must be between the ages of 12-18 years-old and dancing at an Intermediate/Advanced level with at least two years of prior dance experience.

Placement/Choreography: On the first day, students will be placed into one of three technical levels. Dancers enrolled in the full intensive will have additional rehearsals led by one of three choreographers and will perform in a final showcase on the the very last day.

Dancers seeking a merit scholarship should attend a scholarship audition or submit an audition via video link.Only partial scholarships will be awarded.

 

Online Merit Scholarship Application & Video Audition

Submission Deadline: April 1

To be considered, applicants must complete the online application, write a brief essay, and submit a video audition in addition to meeting the intensive’s enrollment requirements by the deadline. No exceptions.

Applicants should upload their video using youtube.com and mark their video as “unlisted.” This service is free. Include the video URL on your online application.

Applicants should dress in ballet attire and wear flat ballet shoes. It is optional for advanced dancers to wear pointe shoes.

Video auditions must include following criteria (not to exceed 15 minutes):

  • Applicant stating their first and last name, age, hometown and dance studio
  • Ballet combinations at the barre (one side only):
    • Demi and grand plié – in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th position
    • Tendu and dégagé – from either 1st or 5th position
  • Grand battlement and a balance in arabesque
  • Ballet combinations in center (one side only):
    • Adagio – must include développés, penchés, and promenades\
    • Pirouettes – must include pirouettes en dedans and en dehors
  • Petit allégro – must include changements, jetés, and assemblés.
  • Grand allégro – must include grand jetés and grand jeté en tournants.
